The past tense and past participle of 'lay': you put something down somewhere, usually carefully and in a flat position. It is also the form used when a bird or an insect has produced an egg.
laid 是動詞 lay（把某個東西放下、擺好）的過去式，也是它的過去分詞——兩個長得一樣：I laid it here.（過去式）／It has been laid.（過去分詞）。lay 後面一定要接「被放下的那個東西」，所以 laid 也一樣：laid the plates、laid the bricks、laid an egg。一種想法是：laid 就像把 lay 那個「把東西放下，然後留在那裡」的畫面直接講成已經做完了。最容易跟它搞混的是 lie（躺、平放在某處）：lie 的過去式是 lay、過去分詞是 lain，跟 laid 沒有關係，所以「他躺在草地上」講 He lay on the grass。

This is not a word with its own meaning — you can think of it as lay wearing its past clothes. The picture belongs to lay: a hand putting something down onto a surface, flat and on purpose, as when you lay a book on the table. So 'laid' shows that same act already finished: She laid the baby on the bed.
