Krypton is a gas you cannot see or smell. Only a tiny amount of it is in the air around us. It is a chemical element; the short symbol is Kr. Factories put it in some bright lights and in some lasers, because it can make a strong, clean light. The name comes from an old Greek word for hidden, because it was hard to find — it hides in air. It is one of the noble gases: they do not mix easily with other things. Though actually, a lot of students meet the word first from Superman, whose home planet is called Krypton. That planet was named after this gas, not the other way round, and the gas itself will not make anyone weak. In science class it is just a quiet element in the air.
