In the Superman stories, Kryptonite is a kind of rock from Superman’s home planet, . Near it, he becomes weak and can even die; without it, almost nothing can hurt him. The famous kind is green, though later stories invented other colours with other effects. People also stretch the word in ordinary talk: they call something “someone’s kryptonite” when it is the one thing that can stop a strong person — a fear, a subject at school, a type of problem. That second use is informal, from comics and films, not from science. The name is the planet plus -ite, a usual ending for rocks and minerals. The planet itself was named after the real gas . You will almost always see a capital K, because it started as a story name.
