    A kingmaker is someone who has the power to decide, or strongly shape, who gets an important job — originally, who becomes king. The word started in the 16th century as a name for Warwick the Kingmaker (Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick). In the Wars of the Roses his moves helped push Henry VI off the throne and put Edward IV on it, then put Henry back again. Today newspapers use it far beyond kings: a party boss, a rich donor, a coach, or a senior person who can make or break a career. It can sound (this person shapes history) or wary (this person has too much quiet power). It is a serious, slightly dramatic word from and history, now stretched to business and sport. The person does not “make” a king with their hands; they choose, back, or topple the one who leads.

組成king + maker. Originally used in the 16th century in “Warwick the Kingmaker”, an epithet of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick (1428–1471).
