Kindling is the small dry stuff you put down first when you start a fire: thin sticks, dry leaves, bits of bark or paper. You light the kindling, and the kindling then lights the bigger logs. Without it, a fat log often will not catch. People also use the word for that first small layer in a fireplace or a . Strictly, it can also name the act of getting a fire going, because it is the -ing form of the verb kindle, “to start a fire” — though actually, in ordinary talk it almost always means the little fuel itself. It is a practical home-and-outdoor word, not a fancy one. Specialist science uses the same spelling for other ideas (a brain being set off more and more easily, for example), but that is not this sense.
