Juxtaposition is the name of that placing — or of the pair you get when you have done it. A juxtaposition of rich and poor, old and new, funny and sad: the point is that they sit side by side, so your eye or your heart has to hold both at once. You meet it in the same places as the verb : school writing, museums, reviews — not when someone asks for the salt.
