1. 1

This is a very offensive insult for a Jewish person. Do not use it. I am explaining it only so that you recognise it if you meet it in a book, a film, or something someone says, and understand at once that it is an attack. In English it sits at the same level as the worst racial insults — hearing it, an English speaker does not think "rude", they think the speaker is a racist. The strange part of its history is that the word came from itself, where yid simply means "Jew" and is completely neutral; when non-Jewish English speakers picked it up in the 1800s they used it with hatred, and that hatred is now inside the English word. There is one narrow modern exception you may run into: some fans of the London football club Tottenham Hotspur, a club with old Jewish support, call themselves Yids on purpose, to take the insult away from the enemy fans who shouted it at them. That is a fight inside English football that many Jewish people still object to, and it does not make the word safe for you. If you need to talk about this in English, say "a Jewish person" or "a Jew" — "Jew" as a plain noun is the correct neutral word.

組成Taken straight from Yiddish ייִד (yid), meaning simply 'Jew'. So English has two words from the same source: the neutral 'Jew' by a long road through Latin and French, and this one by a short road from Yiddish — and the short one turned into an insult in English mouths.
