An irruption is a sudden rush of people or things into a place. They break in, in a wave, not by slow arrival. It is a fairly formal or literary noun; in ordinary talk people more often say a rush, a flood, or they burst in. You might meet it in news or books when a crowd pours into a hall, or when animals suddenly move into an area. Though actually, it is easy to hear eruption instead. Eruption is a breaking out — a volcano, a rash, a sudden burst outward. Irruption is a breaking in. The two sit back to back: out versus in.
