Literally, it's used for things like (a burst pipe), or in medicine, for a body part that tears or bursts (a ruptured appendix, a ruptured disc in your back) — this is often serious and needs a doctor right away. Figuratively, a rupture in a relationship, friendship, or agreement means a serious, sudden break between people or groups.
