1. 1

Ironbridge is both a famous bridge and the name of the place around it. The bridge crosses the River in Shropshire, in western England. It was finished in 1779, and it was the first bridge ever built of cast iron — iron poured into a shape and left to go hard. Before that, big bridges were wood or stone. The land around the bridge became a busy heart of the Industrial Revolution, with furnaces and workshops making iron on a new scale. Today people go there as a museum place: you walk the old bridge and see how iron-making changed work and towns. The name is simply the two ordinary words iron and bridge, written as a place name after that one bridge.
