Iran is a country in southwest Asia. It sits between Iraq on the west and Afghanistan and Pakistan on the east, with the Persian Gulf to the south. The capital is Tehran. In English the country was long called ; in 1935 the government asked the world to use Iran, the name closer to what people there already used. The old name did not die: we still say Persian for the main language, the culture, and things like carpets. Iran has a great deal of oil. It is a strongly Muslim country, and since 1979, when the Shah (the king) was removed, Muslim religious leaders have held a lot of political power, even though there are also elections. Iran and Iraq fought a long war in the 1980s. Though actually, mix Iran and Iraq constantly — they are neighbours, not one place.
組成Borrowed from Persian ایران (Irân), from Classical Persian ērān, from Middle Persian ʾērān, “of the Aryans” — that is, the land of the Iranian peoples. The name of the country grew from that older name for the tribes who lived there.
