1. 1

Irangate is a name some newspapers gave to a US political scandal in the mid-1980s. Many people say the Iran-Contra affair instead. Officials working for President Reagan had sold weapons to Iran, hoping this would help free Americans held as hostages. They then used money from those sales to help the Contras, a rebel army fighting the government in . Congress had already said the government must not fund the Contras that way, so the secret path around the law was the real shock. The story broke in 1986; the big public hearings were in 1987. Though actually, the “-gate” is not a gate at all. English copied it from Watergate, an earlier scandal, and journalists now stick -gate on all sorts of political messes.
