Iranian means “from Iran, or to do with Iran,” and it is also the word for a person from that country. You say Iranian food, Iranian films, the Iranian government, and “She is Iranian.” It is not the name of the country itself — that name is Iran. Iran is the large country in southwest Asia between Iraq and Afghanistan, with its capital at Tehran. English used to call it ; it produces a lot of oil; it fought Iraq in the 1980s; and since the Shah was removed in 1979, Muslim religious leaders have held a great deal of political power there. Iranian is simply the adjective and the people-word built from that name. Though actually, the main language is usually called Persian (or ) in English, not “Iranian,” and mixing Iranian with Iraqi is one of the most common slips on the map.
