    An insurer is the person or, much more often, the company that sells insurance and pays if the bad thing happens. You pay them; they take the risk. In everyday talk people usually say insurance company; insurer is the tidier word you see in contracts, news, and the small print. In law, the insurer is one side of the deal. The other side is the person who buys the policy — and sometimes a different person who is covered by it. Though actually, in casual speech often mix insurer with the person who is insured. Those are opposite seats at the same table.
