To innovate is to start using new ideas, new methods, or new inventions — to change how a job is done, not only to make one new object. Companies, schools, and governments all love this verb; in business talk it can become a , used so often that it means little more than we want to look modern. Though actually, innovate is not a twin of invent. Invent is make a thing that was not there. Innovate is bring a new way in — you can innovate with someone else's invention. First attested in 1548; borrowed from Latin innovatus, the perfect participle of innovo, to renew.
