To infuriate someone is to make them extremely angry — not a little , but boiling. If a late train infuriates you, you are furious, not just put out. The word is a bit strong and a bit formal; in chat, people more often say it drives me mad, it makes me so angry, or, in Taiwan English class talk, it makes me 火大. You infuriate a person (it infuriates me); you can also say I am infuriated, meaning the anger has already arrived. Though actually, speakers sometimes reach for infuriate when they only mean “this bothers me a lot.” That a word that still, in careful use, sits next to fury — real rage, not a sigh.
組成From Latin furia (rage, fury), with in- and the verb ending -ate; perhaps through Italian infuriato. First written down in English in 1667.
