Infrequent means not happening often. An infrequent visitor does not come many times. Infrequent rain in a dry year is rain that is rare. It is a quiet, slightly careful word — more like a textbook than like ‘hardly ever.’ Though actually, English speakers still use it in ordinary talk, especially before a noun: infrequent flights, infrequent contact. After a verb they often choose something simpler: it does not happen often. Be careful with not infrequent, which looks like a negative but means ‘it happens quite a bit.’ That twist is a habit of formal English, not a trick you must copy.
