Infanticide is the crime of killing a baby or a very young child. That is the sense you will meet in law, history, and news. In older or legal use it can also name the person who does it. It is a hard, formal word, not an everyday one, and it is grim on purpose: it does not mean hurt a child in a loose way, and it does not mean parenting. Though actually, scientists also use it for animals, when an adult kills young of its own kind; that is the same idea in biology, not a courtroom. You do not need this word for ordinary life. If you meet it, it is naming something specific and dark.
