To individualize something is to change it so that it fits one particular person or case, instead of giving everyone the same thing. A teacher individualizes lessons for a student who is ahead; a doctor individualizes the dose for a small patient; a company individualizes its emails so each one uses your name and your last order. You will meet it most often in education, medicine, and business writing — it is a somewhat formal word, and you would rarely say it while chatting with a friend. In everyday speech people say 'make it fit her', 'do it just for him', or use the near-twin word customize. There is a second, less common use: to individualize can mean to make something stand out as separate from the group — 'the painter individualizes every face in the crowd', meaning he gives each one its own look instead of painting a blur. Spelling: individualize in American English, individualise in British English. Both are correct; in Taiwan, textbooks usually follow American spelling.
