If a test, a meeting, a vote, or a piece of evidence is inconclusive, it does not lead to a clear decision or result. You still do not know the answer. Scientists use it a lot: an inconclusive study does not settle the question. Doctors, police, and news writers use it too. It is a calm, fairly formal word. It does not mean “wrong,” “bad,” or “useless” — only “not enough to decide.” Though actually, people sometimes call a talk inconclusive when they simply could not agree, which stretches the word a little, but you will hear it.
