Incest is sex between people who are too closely related in a family — for example a parent and a child, or a and a sister. Almost every society treats this as a very serious wrong, and in most places it is also against the law. The word is a noun. You meet it in news, law, and serious books; it is not a casual word, and it is not a kind joke. Though actually, you will also see the adjective incestuous. Sometimes that still means this sexual crime. Sometimes writers stretch it: they call a small industry or a circle of friends incestuous when the same people keep hiring each other and nobody new gets in. That second use is figurative and a bit sharp about the group; it does not mean those people are having sex. Both uses are real, so read the sentence before you decide. English borrowed the word from Latin. An older native English word was pushed out.
組成Learned borrowing from Latin incestus, “not chaste”: in- “not” + castus “pure.” It is a doublet of the rare word inchaste. It replaced Old English mǣġhǣmed, literally “relative-sex.”
