If a person, a question, or a remark is impertinent, it is rude because it does not show respect — especially to someone older or more important. An impertinent child talks back. An impertinent question pushes into private things, or speaks to a boss as if you were already friends. The word is rather formal. In everyday talk people more often say rude, cheeky, or “that’s none of your business.” You will still meet impertinent in stories, in news, and when an adult is carefully angry. Though actually, the Latin and French behind it meant “not belonging; not about the matter.” English kept that cool “this is not your place” feeling inside the . There is also an old noun use, an impertinent, for a rude person; you will rarely hear that now.
