Impertinence is the noun for rudeness that does not show respect, especially to someone older, higher up, or in charge. It is not just any bad manners. It is speaking as if you were their equal, answering back, or asking something that is not your business. Teachers, parents, and bosses still use this word when they are properly displeased. It sounds a little old and a little formal — more like a telling-off in a book than something friends say to each other. Though actually, the word was built to mean “not to the point.” Pertinent means “about the matter in hand.” Impertinence started as a remark that did not belong there. From that it became “you have no right to say that,” and then “how dare you.” So when someone calls a question an impertinence, they may mean it is rude, or that it is none of your business, or both at once.
