If someone is imperious, they give orders and expect to be obeyed, and they do it as if they stand above you. An imperious tone. An imperious wave of the hand. can be a tired parent. Imperious has pride in it — a little of the old ruler in the voice. We use it about people, and it is usually not a compliment. Though actually, older English also used it for a need that will not wait — an imperious need — as if the need itself were giving orders from inside. That use is rarer now. It is a book-and-essay word more than a talking word. Friends would just say she talks as if she is in charge.
