An illusionist is a person on a stage who makes you see what is not there: a coin disappears, a bird flies out of an empty hat, a box seems empty and then is not. In ordinary English many people just say magician. Illusionist sounds more like a stage title, and it points to tricks of the eye rather than pulling rabbits from hats. There is a much rarer use among thinkers: someone who claims that the self or the world is, in some way, an illusion. Students almost always need the stage meaning. Though actually even performers argue about the word — some prefer magician, some prefer illusionist.
