Something illusory looks real, useful, or solid, but is not. Hope can be illusory (it will not come true). Safety can be illusory (you only feel safe). Money on paper can be illusory (it is not really there). It is a careful, rather formal word, at home in news and essays. It is stronger than “unlikely”: it says the way things look is doing a kind of trick. Though actually it does not always mean someone meant to trick you; the mind can fool itself.
