The noun. Ignominy is public shame — the state of having lost your good name, or the event itself. It is used two ways. As an uncountable idea: 'he lived out his last years in ignominy'. And, much more commonly, in one fixed frame: 'suffer / face / endure the ignominy of ___', where the blank is the thing. 'They suffered the ignominy of relegation.' 'She faced the ignominy of being asked to leave.' If you learn only one thing about this word, learn that frame — it is where the word actually lives. It is a formal, written word: newspapers, sports pages, history books, speeches. In everyday Taiwanese-student English you would just say 'the shame of' or 'how it was'. Note the difference from plain 'shame': shame can be the feeling inside you, alone in your room. Ignominy is public — it needs other people watching.
