The adverb of ignominious: to do something, or have something happen to you, in a way that leaves you publicly . It tells you HOW something ended or how someone left. The strongest pattern is with verbs of losing and leaving: lose ignominiously, fail ignominiously, be ignominiously defeated, be ignominiously sacked, be ignominiously dumped out of a competition, retreat ignominiously. Notice how often it appears in the passive — ignominiously thrown out, ignominiously removed — because the word is about something being done TO you in front of an audience. Sports reports and news writing use it constantly. Like the adjective, it is also used with a smile for small humiliations that are not really serious: 'I fell ignominiously off my bike in front of the whole class.' Nobody uses this word in casual conversation; in speech people say 'and it was so embarrassing'.
