An ideologue is someone whose actions are steered, almost all the time, by an ideology. They do not just have opinions; they measure the world against a doctrine, and they find it hard to bend. The word is rarely a compliment. It often suggests the person is rigid, and will not let awkward facts get in the way. You meet it in political writing more than in ordinary chat. It came into English from French around 1800, from the same family as ideology — and from early on it could be used as a jab, not a medal.
