    Idealise is the British spelling of idealize. The word means to picture a person, a time, a country, or a way of life as better, purer, or more perfect than it really is. You can idealise a childhood, a teacher, a love, ‘the old days’. It often carries a gentle warning: the picture in your head is too kind, and it may let you down. Americans usually write idealize; in Britain, and in a lot of English writing outside the US, you will also see idealise. Same word, same meaning — only the ending is spelled differently (-ise against -ize). It is built from ideal, the picture of how things should be.
