Hurling is Ireland’s own fast ball game, not a hobby on the side. Two teams of fifteen use a flat wooden stick to hit a small hard ball: you may strike it on the ground, strike it in the air, or catch it in the hand and then hit it away. It looks a little like hockey, and a little like a catching game with a stick, but it is neither. The play is quick and rough; players run hard and bump into each other, and Irish people grow up with it the way some countries grow up with football. The women’s game is almost the same idea, with a few different rules. Outside Ireland you will hardly see it played, so the word usually turns up in Irish news, sport pages, or stories set there. Though actually, English also uses hurling as the -ing form of the verb hurl, “to throw with force” — hurling a stone, hurling insults. This entry is not that. This entry is the Irish team sport.
