A hundredweight is an old unit for how heavy something is, used in trade for things like farm goods, coal, or metal. The name sounds like 'a hundred of weight,' but though actually the number is not the same everywhere. In Britain the old hundredweight is 112 pounds, about 50.8 . In the United States it is 100 pounds, about 45.3 . The British 112-pound measure is sometimes called a long hundredweight; the American 100-pound one is a short hundredweight. You may see the short form cwt. In Taiwan you will almost never need this; people here use . It still turns up in older British writing and in some trade history.
