HSE is the Health and Safety Executive, a British government body — not a company, and not the police — whose job is to stop people getting hurt or made ill at work. It writes the rules workplaces must follow, inspects places like factories and building sites, and can fine or take bosses to court if they ignore them. It also puts out a lot of free advice. You will see HSE on British signs, accident reports, and official forms. Though actually, it covers Great Britain; Northern Ireland has its own body. The United States has a similar idea called OSHA, which is a different organisation. People say the letters: H-S-E. This is official British English; outside the UK you may only meet it in British news.
