Housewares are the small useful things a home needs that are not furniture and not food: plates, pans, lamps, bins, hangers, that sort of thing. In a big American shop, Housewares is often the name of the department that sells them. The word is almost always plural — you walk through housewares; you rarely buy ‘a houseware’. It is shop language more than home language. British shops are more likely to say household goods, homeware, or kitchenware. You would not usually point at your own kettle at dinner and call it housewares; that is how a store groups what it sells.
