1. 1

To housetrain a pet is to teach it not to wee or poo inside the house. You take a puppy out often, or you give a cat a litter box, until the animal learns where it is allowed to go. When that has worked, we say the pet is house-trained. British English likes house-train; American English often says housebreak and — same job, different word. People sometimes stretch it, a little jokingly, to a small child learning the toilet, but the real home of the word is dogs and cats. It is about keeping the house clean, not about teaching tricks, and it is not about training a house.
