1. 1

A housemistress is a woman teacher in charge of one house in a school — the same kind of school group as for housemaster, especially in British boarding schools. She looks after the children’s daily life in that house, not only their lessons. Mistress here is the older school word for a woman teacher, as in headmistress. Though actually, mistress also has a private, adult meaning (a woman in a secret relationship), and that meaning sits in the background, so housemistress can feel old-fashioned. Schools still use it; careful speakers in other settings may just say the teacher in charge of the house.

    女舍監、宿舍女主任(英國學校 house「舍」的女負責人;mistress 在這裡是舊式「女老師」,不是「情婦」)
