In some British schools, especially boarding schools, children are put into groups called houses — children of different ages who share a name, often a colour, and often rooms. A housemaster is the man teacher in charge of one house. He looks after daily life, not only lessons: sleep, meals, behaviour, and who to call when something is wrong. The house here is not a family home. The word is strongly British and school-flavoured; ordinary American schools do not use it this way. The woman in the same job is a housemistress.
