A hopper is a large container shaped like a funnel: wide at the top so you can pour a lot in, narrow at the bottom so grain, coal, ice, or little plastic pieces can fall through a hole in a steady stream. Farms, factories, and trains use them. A hopper wagon on a railway is a truck built this way, so the load can drop out through doors underneath. The same spelling, built the same way, can also mean a person or a creature that hops — a is the famous one. In some kitchens, especially Sri Lankan ones, a hopper is a thin bowl-shaped ; that food name came by a different road, from Tamil and Sinhalese, so it only looks like the funnel word. In ordinary English, the big funnel is the meaning you will meet first.
組成hop (to jump) + -er (someone or something that does that). From Middle English hoppere, an old form of hoppe that also lives inside grasshopper: one who hops. The funnel sense grew from that picture of things dropping through.
