A grasshopper is an insect you often see in long grass in warm months. It has a long body and strong back legs built for jumping — it can hop a long way for its size — and it makes short, dry, clicking or chirping noises, usually by rubbing a leg against a wing. They eat plants. They are not the same as crickets, which often sing at night from hiding, or , which are the kind that fly in huge hungry clouds and eat whole fields. They are cousins in shape, and people mix the three up all the time — English speakers too, not only .
It is an everyday nature word, slightly old-fashioned in stories (“knee-high to a grasshopper” means very small, like a child), but the insect itself is still the main meaning.
組成grass + hopper. A hopper is something that hops. From Old English græshoppa; Dutch, German, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian have the same two-piece picture.
