If a group of people or a collection of things is homogeneous, they are all of the same type — same kind, same quality, not a mix. A jar of only white rice is homogeneous; a jar of rice and beans is not. In science, a homogeneous mixture looks the same all the way through, like sugar in tea. Social scientists use it for a class or a town where people share the same background, and they often say it with a slightly critical voice, as if too much were dull or closed. It is a formal word. In ordinary talk you would just say "all the same" or "uniform." The stress sits on the third beat: ho-muh-JEE-nee-us, five . Students often squash it, or swap it with homogenous, which looks like a twin. Homogenous is an older biology word for "coming from the same origin"; newspapers now use both as if they were one word, though actually careful science writing still prefers homogeneous for "all the same type." The front piece homo- means "same," the same homo- as in . It does not mean "man." The opposite is — mixed, of different kinds.
