To homogenize something is to change it so that its parts become similar, or the same. The picture most people have is milk: a machine breaks the fat into tiny drops so they stay mixed, and you no longer get a cream layer on top. From that factory sense the word spread. A company may homogenize its shops so every branch looks identical. A critic may say that a streaming service homogenizes music — it sands down the odd, local edges until everything sounds alike. That second use is almost never a compliment. American English homogenize; British English often homogenise. Both are said ho-MOJ-uh-nize, with the stress on MOJ, which is a different rhythm from homogeneous (ho-muh-JEE-nee-us). The -ize / -ise spelling does not change the meaning. Though actually, even in Britain, scientific papers often keep the -ize form.
