Heterogeneous means made of parts or members that are very different from each other. A heterogeneous group is a mixed group. In science, a heterogeneous mixture is one where you can still see the different bits — oil and water, sand and stones — while a homogeneous mixture looks like one thing, such as salt water. It is a formal, academic adjective. Stress: het-uh-ruh-JEE-nee-us. People mix it up with homogeneous, which is the opposite, and the two spellings sit far too close together.
