核心畫面

Picture an arrow. It is not resting on the house; it is pointed at it, with the distance still to cover. That arrow is what the ending -ward puts into a word, the same ending in upward, forward and toward. Homeward is that arrow with home at the far end. Everything this word does is a way of using the arrow: a person walking along it, a bus whose nose is turned down it, or a ship whose whole course has been set along it.

homeward 可以想成一支箭頭。箭頭沒有停在房子上,而是指著房子,中間還有一段路要走。這個方向感是 -ward 更多收起homeward 可以想成一支箭頭。箭頭沒有停在房子上,而是指著房子,中間還有一段路要走。這個方向感是 -ward 這個字尾放進去的,upward、forward、toward 用的是同一個字尾。這個字的每個用法,都像在用這支箭頭:有人沿著它走,有車把車頭轉向它,也有船把整條航線都定在它上面。

From the word’s history

From Middle English homward, from Old English hamweard, which is simply home plus -ward. The word has always been home with a direction attached.

來自中古英文 homward,再往前是古英文 hāmweard,就是 home 加上 -ward。這個字從頭到尾都是「家」加上一個方向。

往家的方向

這一支直接就是那支箭頭。差別只在字放在句子的哪個位置:動詞後面是副詞,名詞前面是形容詞。

r · B2

In the direction of home. It is used after a verb of movement to say that someone or something is travelling towards home.

朝家的方向

航線已經定了:homeward bound

這一支把箭頭固定下來:不只是朝著家,而是「目的地已經設定成家」。意思屬於 homeward bound 這整組字,不是 homeward 自己帶的。

adjective · C1

If a person, ship, plane or group is homeward bound, they are travelling towards home, or are about to set off for home.
