核心畫面

This entry gathers several different words that happen to be spelled the same. The one most meet first is the body part: the wide bone at each side, between waist and leg, that you rest a hand on or carry a child on. The rose fruit, the word for fashionable, and the shout in 'hip, hip, !' are not pictures growing out of that body part — they are separate words that arrived by separate , so it is safer to learn them as four small words than to look for one thread.

These are four different words. The body part is Old English hype, of uncertain origin. The rose fruit is a 16th-century alteration of Middle English hepe, from Old English heope — a separate word of unknown origin. The adjective 'aware, fashionable' dates only to 1904, apparently originally in African-American vernacular, likely a variant of hep. The cheer is from 1827 (earlier hep), origin unclear. None of them derives from any of the others.
