A harpsichordist is a person who plays the harpsichord — the old keyboard instrument whose strings are plucked rather than struck. Because the instrument itself is specialised, so is the job: most harpsichordists work in early music, playing the music of Bach, Handel, Rameau and their time, either as or sitting in an orchestra filling in the harmony under everyone else. Nearly all of them started on the piano and moved across, and many also play the organ, so you often see a person described as 'organist and harpsichordist'. The word is long but completely regular — instrument plus -ist, the same recipe as and violinist — and it is the normal, neutral word, not a technical or fancy one. It is simply not a word you meet often, because there are not many harpsichordists.
