If something is haphazard, it is not planned or organised. Papers in a haphazard pile were just dropped there. A haphazard search means people looked wherever they happened to walk, with no real system. It is not a kind word: it often suggests the job was done , by chance more than by thought. You will hear it at work and in writing; it is a little more formal than messy, but people do say it aloud. Though actually, it does not mean “dangerous,” even though you can see hazard inside it. Hazardous means risky. Haphazard means all over the place. The first bit, hap, is an old word for chance or luck — so the whole word is “luck and risk thrown together,” not a careful plan.
