1. 1

A hand-held machine is small and light enough to hold in your hand while you use it — a hand-held camera, a hand-held game, a hand-held vacuum. You will also see it written , as one word, and sometimes as a noun: “a ,” meaning the device itself. A laptop is portable, but you do not really use it while holding it in one hand, so people do not usually call a laptop hand-held. A phone, though, is a typical hand-held thing. The word is simply hand plus held, the past of hold.
