Haemophilia is a serious illness of the blood. In a healthy body, blood gets thick after a cut, and the bleeding stops. In a person with haemophilia, that does not work well, so they can lose a lot of blood from a small injury, and they can also bleed inside the body, often into the joints. It is usually passed down in families, and it almost always shows up in boys and men; girls can carry it and pass it on without being very ill themselves. There is no everyday cure, but doctors can give medicine that helps the blood clot. British spelling keeps the ae; American spelling is hemophilia. People sometimes stretch the word to mean any heavy bleeding, but the real use is this specific clotting disease.

組成haemo- (blood, from Ancient Greek haîma) + -philia (from Greek philía, “friendship / a strong leaning”). It was originally called haemorrhaphilia, probably from haemorrhage — a condition tied to bleeding, not “love of blood”.
