A gyroscope is a wheel that spins inside a frame. While the wheel is spinning, it tries to keep pointing the same way, even if you tilt the frame. Ships and aircraft use this to stay steady and to know which way they are facing. There is also a small one sold as a child’s toy: you start the wheel, and it balances in a way that looks like a trick. The scientific tool and the toy work on the same idea. Some people the word to gyro, though actually that short form also means a kind of Greek sandwich, so the full word is safer when you mean the spinning wheel.
