1. 1

Gyroscopic means using a gyroscope, or acting like one. A gyroscopic compass, or gyroscopic stability, is the spinning-wheel trick that keeps a ship, a plane, or a steady and sure of its direction. You will meet this word in science and engineering more than at the dinner table. It is the adjective; the machine itself is a gyroscope. The toy and the ship’s instrument can both be called gyroscopic when you mean that spinning, stay-steady behaviour.
